Radisson Hotel Provides Students with Sneak Peek into Hospitality During National Groundhog Job Shadow Day

PLYMOUTH, MA MARCH 3, 2004 -- Three students from Plymouth South High School recently “shadowed” key hospitality staff at the Radisson Hotel in Plymouth as part of “National Groundhog Job Shadow Day.”

In partnership with Plymouth South’s Technical Studies Director Warren Valente, the executive staff at the Radisson Hotel provided students with an opportunity to get better acquainted with some of the job opportunities within the hospitality field.

From 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Plymouth South students Mary Ann Chapman from the Technical Studies Culinary Program, and Jessica Lyons and Erin MacDonald from the Marketing Program were able to gain first-hand experience of kitchen and executive operations. Chapman spent the day in the kitchen, training in different entree preparations and presentations used in the Radisson’s Harbor Grille restaurant. Chapman was able to prepare two orders that came in from the restaurant. Lyons and MacDonald spent the day understanding the hotel financial statements, systems, flow of information and guest complaint resolution in preparation for a Regional DECA competition.

“Job Shadowing is possibly the best way to tie-in classroom knowledge with real-life examples. By experiencing day-to-day operations, students learn of the wisdom and skill needed for success within a particular industry,” said Jim Hoppensteadt, General Manager of the Radisson Hotel Plymouth Harbor. “We’re very pleased to serve as workplace mentors and to share what we know with young people who are considering a career in hospitality.”

National Job Shadow Day, launched February 2, 2004, is designed to give students across the nation a more personal look at potential jobs as they “shadow” mentors of various industries.
