It’s Time Expired Cosmetics Come Out of the Closet
September 13, 2004 -- Sure, seasonal cleaning can happen just twice a year. Overlooking the dust under the sofa will do for now – But what about the overflowing drawer that is home to your oh-so-important collection of cosmetics? Time for a change may have come sooner than expected. Along with the changing of the seasons (and your wardrobe) come new cosmetic colors. But that doesn’t mean you should reach to the back of your make-up drawer for last year’s shades.
Quick. List the contents of your cosmetic drawer. If you are coming up blank, it’s time for a cosmetics clean sweep. Denise Baron of Too Little Time Lifestyle Services says requests to clean out makeup and cosmetic drawers are becoming one of the most frequent seasonal cleaning demands. “Our clients need help taming their extensive collections of lotions, perfumes, lipsticks and nail polishes,” says Baron, “I am frequently asked, ‘what should I keep and what should go?’”
Use it or lose it. Do you use that eye shadow regularly (daily or weekly)? Send infrequently used products packing. Seeing double
Do you have 6 lipsticks of a very similar hue? Keep your favorites and toss the runner-ups.
Past its prime. Did you wear that perfume at a Millennium party? Pitch expired products.
Imagine your cosmetics are a food pantry. A bag of chips wouldn’t stay in your cupboard for 5 years and neither should you nail polish. As a rule of thumb, cosmetics have a shelf life between 1-3 years, except for products used around the eyes. Check out the expiration date for common cosmetics as follows:
